EdgeconneX Expands in Japan with New 150MW Data Centre in Greater Osaka

Kuala lumpur: EdgeConneX has unveiled plans to expand its presence in Japan by acquiring a second data centre site in the Greater Osaka and Yawata areas. This new facility will boost the company's total data centre platform capacity to 350 megawatts (MW) of utility power, emphasizing the region's potential for scalability.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, EdgeConneX, a leader in global build-to-suit and build-to-density data centre solutions, announced that the new site will add an additional 150MW upon completion. This expansion complements the previously announced 200MW project in Japan, reinforcing the company's commitment to supporting the country's digital transformation.

Sam Lee, Managing Director of Market and Commercial Development at EdgeConneX, stated, "Our rapid expansion in Japan signifies our commitment to supporting the country's digital transformation. By blending world-class technology, sustainability, and innovation, EdgeConneX is uniquely positioned to meet the demands of a power-constrained and high-growth market like Japan."

Masahiko Inoue, EdgeConneX Head of Japan, highlighted the strategic importance of these facilities, noting that they aim to meet the increasing demand for advanced IT infrastructure while strengthening Japan's position as a global leader in cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

Leveraging EdgeConneX's expertise in AI and next-generation data centre design, the facilities are designed to handle workloads exceeding 600 kilowatts (kW) per rack. This capability is supported by the company's high-density Ingenuity product suite, which facilitates advanced deployments of NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel technologies.

The strategic placement of these data centres in Greater Osaka, combined with Japan's burgeoning digital economy, underscores the country's role as a crucial hub for Cloud and AI providers. A recent ceremony, attended by landowner Keihan Real Estate, celebrated this expansion milestone, further cementing the collaborative efforts in this venture.

This development follows EdgeConneX's earlier announcement in January of a 200MW facility in Japan, which is set to commence construction in early 2026, with the first phase expected to open by the fourth quarter of 2027. Once completed, EdgeConneX will stand as one of the largest data centres in the Kansai area, aligning with Japan's vision for a Digital Garden City Nation.
