Education Ministry to Decide on School Closures Amid Haze

Siena:Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek stated that the decision to close or reopen schools in response to the haze will be based on standard operating procedures (SOPs), guidelines, and advice from relevant agencies.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Minister emphasized that these decisions will rely on input from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia), the Ministry of Health (MOH), and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES). The Ministry of Education considers air quality assessments, health advice, and discussions with relevant committees before making such decisions.

Fadhlina highlighted that the Ministry does not act alone but follows SOPs and guidelines provided by METMalaysia and the MOH. This approach includes periodic directives and full adoption of guidelines from NRES and the MOH. She conveyed this information at the 'Petah KPM 2026' programme.

The Minister also urged parents to prioritize their children's health by not sending them to school if they are unwell, advising them to inform the school of any such situations. She expressed gratitude for parents' cooperation in addressing health issues and their communication with the Ministry, which aids decision-making during the haze.

Fadhlina stressed the importance of balancing students' health protection with the educational impact of prolonged school closures. As the haze may continue until November or December, decisions will be made collaboratively following guidelines from relevant agencies.

The 'Petah KPM' initiative supports the 'Upholding the Malay Language and Strengthening the English Language' (MBMMBI) policy, promoting proficiency in both languages to encourage fluent and courteous communication among various ethnic groups.
