Egypt Invites Malaysia To Co-Host Gaza Reconstruction Conference

Kuala lumpur: Egypt has officially requested Malaysia to not only attend but also co-organise the upcoming Gaza Reconstruction Conference, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar revealed this development following discussions with his Egyptian counterpart, Mostafa Madbouly, during the G20 Leaders Summit. The request was accompanied by greetings from President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Anwar highlighted the need to consult with Malaysia's Foreign Ministry to gather further details before making a decision on the matter.

The conference aims to garner support from Arab, Muslim, American, and other nations to implement the first phase of development in Gaza comprehensively. Anwar expressed Malaysia's agreement with the initial phase proposed by US President Donald Trump, while emphasizing the importance of a more holistic solution that aligns with Malaysian policy.

During the press conference, Anwar was joined by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

In addition to the discussions on Gaza, Anwar shared insights from his meeting with Brazilian President Luiz In¡cio Lula da Silva, who praised Petronas' achievements in Brazil and expressed interest in expanding its operations. This marks Anwar's second participation in the G20 Leaders' Summit as a guest, following an invitation by South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa. Malaysia is set to chair ASEAN in 2025.

Concluding his engagements, Anwar is scheduled to travel to Nairobi, Kenya, marking the final destination of his three-country African tour.
