El Nino Preparedness and ATM Training Safety Under Scrutiny in Dewan Rakyat

Kuala lumpur: The government's readiness to tackle the El Nino phenomenon, the investigation into a hand grenade explosion during a Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) training session, and the spread of deviant teachings are among the key topics at the Dewan Rakyat sitting today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Dewan Rakyat Order Paper outlines several critical issues to be addressed during the Minister's Question Time. Bakti Jamaluddin (BN-Tangga Batu) is set to question the Agriculture and Food Security Minister about the government's strategies to mitigate the anticipated effects of the El Nino phenomenon on agriculture and food security. The inquiry will cover measures for irrigation water supply, production of padi and other food crops, livestock requirements, and efforts to maintain national food supply levels.

Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) is also expected to question the Defence Minister regarding the recent hand grenade explosion during an ATM training exercise. He seeks information on the causes of the incident and the ministry's actions to enhance the safety standard operating procedures (SOPs) for future training sessions.

In addition, Tan Kok Wai (PH-Cheras) will request that the Prime Minister detail the governance and administrative reforms to be implemented by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). These reforms follow the Feasibility Study of the Federal Capital Act 1960 (Act 190) and encompass administration, governance, integrity, and service delivery improvements.

Sabri Aziz (PN-Jerai) plans to address the challenges the government faces in countering the spread of deviant teachings in Malaysia. He will inquire about the intervention measures being undertaken to reinforce the faith of individuals who have diverged from traditional Islamic teachings.

Health concerns, specifically non-communicable diseases, will be highlighted when Datuk Dr Richard Rapu (GPS-Betong) asks the Health Minister for the latest statistics on conditions such as diabetes and hypertension between 2024 and 2026. He will also inquire about the success of the War on Sugar campaign and the enforcement of the sugar tax in reducing obesity rates nationally.

The session today will also include the second reading of the National Trust Fund Bill 2026, presented by the Finance Minister. The Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament, which covers 16 days, is set to conclude today.
