Melaka:The increasing use of social media by the elderly has raised concerns about their vulnerability to online scams, which can lead to significant financial losses, including the depletion of pension funds and savings.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Che Murad Sayang Ramjan, director-general of the Social Welfare Department (JKM), emphasized the necessity for continuous awareness and advocacy efforts. These efforts aim to encourage senior citizens to practice greater caution when using social media and interacting online.
In response to the rising number of scam cases, JKM collaborates with various agencies, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), to conduct awareness programs through its Senior Citizens Activity Centres (PAWE). These initiatives are designed to prevent the elderly from becoming scam victims.
Che Murad highlighted the prevalence of scams targeting the elderly, often resulting in substantial financial losses. He shared these insights with the media at the National-Level Senior Citizens Day Celebration 2026 at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh. The event was officiated by Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
He further urged the children of elderly individuals to monitor their parents closely to help protect them from online scams. This measure is deemed crucial, as feelings of loneliness, especially among those living alone, may lead them to spend excessive time on social media.
Che Murad pointed out that loneliness can drive the elderly to seek engagement through television and social media, underscoring the importance of raising awareness to prevent them from falling victim to scams.
Additionally, Che Murad mentioned that JKM would continue to collaborate with the ministry on issues related to the welfare and protection of senior citizens, including the proposed Elderly Protection Bill. As the implementing agency, JKM is committed to safeguarding the welfare of the elderly through its various operations, advocacy programs, and activities.
