Emerging Technologies Could Help Combat Digital Threats, Says Sarawak Premier

Sarawak: Emerging technologies, particularly in microchip development, could provide effective safeguards against digital threats such as deepfakes, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He highlighted ongoing research aimed at developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to counter digital scams and deception during a press conference at the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari mentioned that technological solutions are on the horizon, emphasizing a specific chip designed to detect manipulated content by distinguishing what is genuine from what is not. He underscored the importance of balancing technological advancements with vigilance in managing the growing influence of AI and digitally fabricated content media.

The Premier pointed out the necessity of natural checks and balances, comparing the light and dark aspects of technology to the cycle of day and night. He expressed optimism that the ongoing developments in microchips could represent a solution to the challenges posed by deepfakes.

In his speech, Abang Johari urged media practitioners to reaffirm their role as guardians of public trust, especially as AI becomes more prevalent in newsrooms. He cautioned against being overly enamored with AI's capabilities, reminding journalists to uphold human values and ensure that technology remains a tool rather than a master.

The second edition of SMeC 2025, which began today, attracted more than 700 participants. The two-day event features a distinguished line-up of local and international media and communication experts who will share their insights on adapting to the digital and AI era.
