Kuala lumpur: All enforcement actions must be carried out with precision to uphold the rule of law and protect the integrity of institutions, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He emphasized that the reasons and procedures for any arrest must be clearly and promptly explained when questioned, highlighting that the focus is not just on enforcing the law but also on its implementation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar stressed the importance of providing clear reasons and responding promptly when the method of an arrest is questioned. He noted that while legal processes and the courts exist, preserving the integrity of enforcement bodies is paramount. Anwar made these remarks at the 2025 International Anti-Corruption Day (HARA). He underscored that institutional integrity is not merely about taking action but also about the manner in which it is executed. If actions are questioned or publicized, appropriate responses must be given.
Anwar also stated that enforcement agencies must be willing to take action against their own members if misconduct occurs, to maintain institutional integrity and ensure the country's security. He emphasized that minor mistakes could be addressed through ordinary disciplinary action, but serious breaches require agencies to be prepared to act against their own. He mentioned that no one, including members of his own office, is exempt from action if issues arise, and stressed that no individual is above the law.
Moreover, Anwar asserted that achieving transparency and integrity in every institution would signify the country's success in maintaining clean governance. He reiterated the government's commitment to an open administration that welcomes complaints, feedback, and advice from all sectors, while ensuring that enforcement actions adhere strictly to legal procedures.
Acknowledging the challenges in combating crime, corruption, and smuggling, Anwar noted that those involved often possess significant financial resources and extensive networks. He remarked on the difficulties of seizing assets when those targeted may have substantial hidden wealth, which they use to influence politicians, infiltrate public systems, and mount attacks through social media.
The event was attended by several key figures, including Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
