Kuala lumpur: The English Speaking Union of Malaysia (ESUM) is preparing to introduce its innovative 'English on Wheels' programme, aimed at making English learning accessible and enjoyable for rural students. This mobile initiative seeks to enhance students' confidence and public speaking skills.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, ESUM Chairman Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah Tuanku Ja'afar announced the project, which is inspired by the concept of a mobile library. Volunteers will travel to schools and universities across the country, particularly focusing on underserved areas, to conduct interactive English sessions and public speaking workshops.
Tunku Naquiah shared that the programme's goal is to visit schools and offer engaging English sessions over several days. She made these remarks following the English Speaking Union (ESU) International Council Meeting 2025 (ICM), which took place recently.
The ICM, which ran from September 29 to October 2, included participants from ten countries such as the United Kingdom, United States, France, and others, all dedicated to strengthening English as a global language.
Tunku Naquiah also mentioned ESUM's successful outreach efforts in Cameron Highlands, where volunteers organized a fun day for the Orang Asli community. Highlighting the decline in English proficiency among Malaysian students, she pointed to inadequate training for English teachers as a contributing factor.
Recalling past efforts, she noted, "We used to send teachers to England, either to Kirby or Brinsford Lodge, for two years to learn English and how to teach it. Those teachers returned with solid skills and went on to teach English effectively."
She further proposed involving retired teachers in the initiative and recommended specialized one-year training for future English teachers at teacher training colleges.
