EU Seeks to Expand Trade Collaboration with ASEAN: Kallas

Jakarta: The European Union (EU) is eager to enhance and diversify its trade relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), acknowledging the increasing significance of the regional bloc, Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated. She highlighted the strategic nature of the EU-ASEAN partnership, especially amidst the current global challenges, and also described it as a security alliance.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kallas remarked that the EU serves as a stabilising force in Europe, while ASEAN plays a similar role within its region. During an interaction with selected media at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related events, she underscored the importance of close collaboration between the EU and ASEAN, noting their shared belief in the principles of free trade.

Kallas expressed the need for a formal free trade agreement between the EU and ASEAN, acknowledging ongoing efforts towards this goal. While she admitted that the process is challenging, she emphasized its significance. The official EU website reveals that the dialogue between the EU and ASEAN has been active for over 50 years, with a Strategic Partnership established in December 2020, marking a new chapter in their enduring relationship.

For the period 2021-2027, the EU has earmarked 180 million pounds to bolster regional cooperation with ASEAN, prioritising key areas in line with the EU-ASEAN Strategic Partnership. The year 2027 will also mark the 60th anniversary of EU-ASEAN relations.

The EU, consisting of 27 member countries including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, and Sweden, participated in the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related gatherings. These events, hosted under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship for 2025 with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', took place from July 8 to 11. The four-day high-level meetings attracted approximately 1,500 delegates, including foreign ministers from ASEAN member states, Timor-Leste, ASEAN Dialogue Partners, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) participants, Sectoral Dialogue Partners, and senior officials from the ASEAN Secretariat.
