Kuala lumpur: The Works Ministry is planning to implement an external auditing system for highway concession companies early next year to ensure that road maintenance works are carried out according to the highest standards. Its minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, said under the initiative, each company responsible for road maintenance will be periodically audited by external auditors, instead of relying solely on internal audits conducted by the Public Works Department (JKR) or the concessionaires themselves.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nanta explained that many concession contracts are due to expire early next year, prompting the need for external audits to ensure the quality of maintenance. He emphasized the need for external expertise in conducting these audits to uphold the highest standards. Requests for new proposals (RFPs) have already been made in certain areas to facilitate this transition.
Nanta made these remarks while speaking to reporters after launching the Malaysia Road Maintenance Convention (MRMC) 2025 and the MY-ASEAN Road and Traffic Technology Expo (My-ARTTE) 2025 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC).
Additionally, Nanta highlighted the importance of highway and road maintenance, which should be prioritized alongside construction to prevent rapid road deterioration. MRMC and My-ARTTE 2025 are strategic platforms for regional road industry players, aiming to shape the future of mobility and connectivity across ASEAN by fostering collaboration and exploring smart technology solutions.
During his speech, Nanta noted that Malaysia is accelerating the integration of smart transport systems, real-time data monitoring, and AI-driven maintenance solutions through the National Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Blueprint 2030. He also mentioned advancements in sustainable engineering using eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient construction to align infrastructure with economic and environmental goals.
Nanta concluded by outlining the ministry's three strategic priorities for the coming decade: digital integration, sustainable engineering, and collaborative innovation, to future-proof Malaysia's infrastructure by leveraging technology and intelligence.
