Kuala Lumpur: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has urged media practitioners to prioritize their health by regularly undergoing screenings, particularly as they fulfill demanding assignments in the field. He emphasized the importance of journalists maintaining their wellbeing to continue delivering accurate and verified information to the public.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi expressed his concern during the Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia (GKMM) Dinner, held as part of the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebrations. He noted the dedication of journalists who often overlook their health, highlighting the need for heart screenings and other health checks.

Fahmi remarked, "I've seen many journalists who need a gentle reminder to take care of their health. Sometimes we forget to look after ourselves. So this is just a little reminder I wish to convey to my fellow journalists."

The event was also attended by Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who also serves as the HAWANA 2025 Project Director, and other senior management from Bernama.

In line with HAWANA 2025, Fahmi urged all sectors to recognize the media's role in providing accurate and timely reports. He expressed his hope that the event would foster greater public appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices of media professionals.

Additionally, Fahmi advised media organisations and practitioners to enhance their understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities and limitations, suggesting that AI should be used to assist rather than replace journalists. He proposed that GKMM and the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPTAR) organize training sessions focused on AI and other skills for media practitioners.

The theme for HAWANA 2025, "Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics," reflects the evolving nature of the field. The three-day event will culminate with a highlight event officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL).
