Federal Government Allocates Over RM4 Billion to Sabah for Rural Water Supply Projects

Kota kinabalu: Over RM4 billion has been allocated by the Federal Government to Sabah for the implementation of Rural Water Supply (BALB) projects. These projects aim to address water issues faced by rural residents in the region. The Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, announced that the authority to implement these projects has been handed over to the state government, with the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) channeling the funds this year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Federal Government transferred the authority to the state government in April, allowing Sabah to execute water supply projects with the specified allocation. Chief Minister Hajiji expressed hope that districts such as Tongod will benefit from these projects, thus overcoming local water challenges. He emphasized the ongoing discussions with the Federal Government, highlighting the devolution of power to the state, including the water issue, over the past five years under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government.

Hajiji made these remarks during his speech at the 2026 Tongod District-Level Kaamatan Festival at Dataran Rakyat Tongod Open Hall. He stressed the importance of maintaining cooperation between state and federal governments while safeguarding Sabah's interests and contributing to national development. Hajiji urged against straining relations with the Federal Government, noting that federal assistance remains crucial for Sabah's development.

Despite potential increases in Sabah's revenue allocations, including through a 40 percent net tax repayment, Hajiji indicated that federal collaboration is vital for the state's continued growth. The Sabah government is committed to focusing on rural development through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan, ensuring that districts like Tongod are not left behind.

Hajiji highlighted significant infrastructure developments in Tongod over the past year, including road networks, economic, educational, and sustainable tourism potentials. The state government is dedicated to upgrading road networks to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth. Additionally, Hajiji handed over 239 land titles to Tongod residents, covering an area of 583.38 hectares, further supporting local development efforts.
