Federal Government Allocates RM444.96 Million for Water Infrastructure in Sabah

Kuala Lumpur:The Federal Government has announced a grant allocation of RM444.96 million to enhance water supply infrastructure in Sabah, focusing on replacing critical pipelines and reducing non-revenue water.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasized that these initiatives aim to boost the efficiency of the water supply system and widen access to clean water, especially in areas with ongoing infrastructure challenges.

Additionally, six water supply projects in Sarawak, costing a total of RM1.272 billion, will proceed through loan financing under the First Rolling Plan of the 13th Malaysia Plan. In Labuan, efforts are underway to improve the water supply system's reliability through maintenance and upgrades to critical components, such as pumping systems, to enhance operational efficiency and minimize supply disruptions.

Fadillah also noted that the implementation of these projects would be coordinated with state governments, considering development priorities, residents' needs, and applicable financial procedures. Furthermore, the National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM) initiated monitoring of groundwater using smart technology in April 2026 to explore its potential as an alternative water supply source.
