FFM35 Introduces New Judging Format with Former Winners

Kuala Lumpur:The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) has unveiled significant changes to the 35th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM35), including a novel judging system that involves former winners in evaluating the 'Top 5' nominees in each category.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, FINAS chairman Datuk Dr Hans Isaac stated that the new format aims to align with the aspirations of the local film industry, enhancing transparency and peer recognition in the judging process.

The revamped approach will see previous FFM winners participating alongside the main jury to assess nominees' works and performances, ensuring that industry insiders play a crucial role in selecting the winners.

The announcement came during a press briefing following the launch of the FFM35 Top 5 nominees, officiated by Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching at Menara FINAS. High-profile attendees included Communications Ministry officials and FINAS executives.

FFM35 is set to feature over 80 local film entries, with the event scheduled for November 21 at Istana Budaya. The ceremony will be broadcast live on RTM TV2.

The festival's Best Film award winner will receive RM1 million in Digital Content Fund support, further encouraging the production of quality films. Hans expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his support of the creative sector in Budget 2027, highlighting initiatives like entertainment duty exemptions.

These measures, Hans noted, are eagerly anticipated by industry players and are expected to boost the global presence of Malaysian films. FINAS aims to have four to five high-quality Malaysian films enter international markets next year with the help of these funds.

FINAS CEO Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib stated that Istana Budaya was chosen as the venue for its historical significance and increased viewer interest.
