FIFTEEN FIRMS GIVING 110 OBB A SECOND CHANCE – PERAK PRISONS CHIEF

TAIPING, A total of 15 companies are involved in the Perak State Prison Youturn Programme organised by Malaysian Care and the Taiping Community Service Association (ESDA), aimed at providing job training to Prisoners Released on Licence (OBB) in the work sector.

Perak Prison director C. Charin Promwichit said this strategic cooperation raises awareness among the community to help rehabilitate prisoners, which reduces government expenditure and overcrowding in prisons.

According to him, under the programme in conjunction with the Ihsan MADANI Release of Prisoners on Licence (PBSL) today, 110 OBB have been hired as employees in various companies under the Corporate Smart Internship (CSI) programme in Perak.

‘The selected prospects comprise 74 OBB in Tapah Prison, 24 in Taiping Prison and 12 in Kamunting Correctional Centre.

‘Those selected were incarcerated for minor crimes but will go through a screening process before approval for jobs,’ he said after closing the programme at the Taiping Prison Officer Tr
aining Centre (PLPP) here today.

Charin added that since the CSI programme started in 2016, as many as 115 companies have employed more than 52,258 inmates released On Parole Order (ODP) and 9,143 OBB throughout the country.

‘Under this programme, the rate of recidivism among working inmates is very low, which was four out of 1,008 people last year,’ he said.
