Kuala lumpur: The recent detention of several police personnel over an alleged extortion case must be treated with the utmost seriousness and addressed without compromise to send a clear message that such misconduct will never be tolerated.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chairman of the Alliance for a Safe Community Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the incident had understandably attracted public attention and raised concerns among Malaysians. Lee expressed that such misconduct is deeply regrettable and cannot be excused, emphasizing the importance of viewing the matter in its proper perspective as the individuals involved are exceptions rather than the rule.

Lee stressed that the actions of the few 'rotten apples' must not be taken lightly, noting that allegations of extortion, particularly when foreign nationals are among the victims, strike at the heart of public trust in the country's law enforcement system. He pointed out that the alleged misconduct had tarnished the image of the police force, undermined public confidence in national institutions, and could also damage Malaysia's international reputation.

Lee asserted that the authorities were right to pursue the matter firmly and without compromise, adding that anyone found guilty must face the full force of the law. He also mentioned that the incident should serve as a catalyst to strengthen checks and balances while reinforcing that the highest standards of integrity and professionalism are upheld throughout the police force.

He concluded by stating that the misdeeds of a small minority must not overshadow the excellent work carried out by the vast majority of dedicated police officers. By acting decisively against those who break the law while continuing to support officers who serve with integrity and professionalism, the credibility of the police force and the trust and confidence of the people they serve can be upheld.
