Kuala lumpur: The first of two Multi-Purpose Mission Ships (MPMS) being constructed by Desan Shipyard in Turkiye for Malaysia is on track for delivery in February next year, as announced by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He emphasized that this development marks a significant advancement in bolstering the capabilities of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), especially amid an increasingly complex maritime security landscape.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Saifuddin Nasution highlighted Turkiye's pivotal role as a partner in enhancing Malaysia's maritime strength during a Facebook post. This came after a courtesy visit from Turkish Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr. Nevzat Uyanik. He underscored the necessity for modern and advanced assets to address the challenges posed by Malaysia's extensive maritime territories.

Saifuddin Nasution expressed optimism that the shipbuilding timeline would proceed without hiccups, ensuring that both vessels are delivered as planned, thereby augmenting MMEA's operational readiness to protect the nation's waters.

In a related development, Saifuddin Nasution also engaged in discussions with Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia, Noriyuki Shikata, in a separate meeting held at his office. The dialogue focused on maritime security collaboration between Malaysia and Japan, as well as the enhancement of bilateral relations.

Saifuddin Nasution noted that the partnership between MMEA and the Japan Coast Guard is well-established, with both entities having conducted joint exercises and operations to exchange expertise and experiences. He welcomed Japan's commitment to this cooperation and identified further opportunities for collaboration in strengthening maritime enforcement capabilities and preparedness.
