Fishermen in Mersing Continue Work Amid Haze

Mersing:Fishermen in Mersing are braving the haze to continue their daily activities, despite reduced visibility. They are taking extra precautions to avoid accidents and are using technology like the Global Positioning System (GPS) for navigation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, a survey at the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Endau Fisheries Complex revealed that fishing activities are ongoing as usual, with no significant impact on the catches so far.

Fisherman Wan Mohamad Amin Firdaus Wan Ya, originally from Kota Bharu and now residing in Endau, mentioned that the haze makes it difficult to see nearby islands from the sea. However, GPS technology, especially on larger boats, helps them maintain their course. He noted that although their catches remain stable, the haze has affected his health, causing coughing and fever.

Syukri Yaacob, another fisherman with over 20 years of experience, stated that the limited visibility necessitates heightened vigilance to avoid collisions with other boats. Despite the conditions, he continues to fish, usually spending up to 10 days at sea.

Zainuddin Mohd, a fisherman from Terengganu, shared that while visibility is reduced, they must proceed with caution to avoid health risks and continue earning a living. He emphasized the importance of being careful to prevent illness.

Area Fishermen's Association general manager Abdul Manaf A Aziz confirmed that fishermen are still going out to sea, with no haze-related incidents reported so far. Although catches have been increasing due to an abundance of fish, he advised fishermen to exercise greater caution in the limited visibility conditions.

The Department of Environment's Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) reported unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in 27 areas across the country, with Pasir Gudang, Johor, recording the highest reading of 177. Other affected areas include Kota Tinggi, Larkin, and Pengerang.
