Kuala terengganu: A total of five deaths due to road accidents were recorded during the RXZ Members 8.0 event which took place last Friday and Saturday, compared to two cases during last year's event.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin reported that the fatalities occurred in Kemaman and Dungun, involving four male victims and one female, all aged between 20 and 48 years old. Mohd Khairi highlighted a significant increase in accident cases during the RXZ Members 8.0 event compared to its predecessor, RXZ Members 7.0. The fatal accidents were distributed with two on federal roads and three on the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2).
The police chief added that 29 accident cases were recorded this year involving participants throughout the period, compared to 11 cases last year. During a press conference at the Terengganu police contingent headquarters (IPK), Mohd Khairi disclosed the arrest of six individuals - four local men, a Singaporean man, and a local woman - for reckless and dangerous driving. They are expected to be charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Furthermore, law enforcement issued 1,850 summonses for various offences and seized 222 motorcycles under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987. Mohd Khairi emphasized that these actions counter claims of police leniency towards the RXZ Members event, which attracted approximately 160,000 participants nationwide.
Confiscation actions targeted motorcycles with non-compliant exhausts and registration numbers. Despite not implementing roadblocks, police conducted enforcement activities through their own strategies. Mohd Khairi affirmed that the issuance of summonses and motorcycle confiscations demonstrated a lack of special treatment for the event.
Additionally, Mohd Khairi reported a fraud case involving a non-existent homestay offer in Kampung Wakaf Tengah, Kuala Nerus, resulting in a RM1,200 loss. The police also detained three individuals under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 30 (3) of the Poisons Act 1952. Preventive measures and law enforcement efforts will be maintained rigorously to ensure the integrity of large-scale gatherings like the RXZ Members programme.
