Foreign Enthusiasts Boost Terengganu Squid Jigging Programme

Marang: This year's Terengganu Squid Jigging Programme will see increased enthusiasm with the participation of 50 foreigners. State Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee chairman Datuk Razali Idris announced that, for the first time, participants from Thailand, Bangladesh, Chile, the Philippines, and France will join the event.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the inclusion of international participants is expected to bolster Terengganu's tourism industry and support the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) promotions. The programme, themed 'Pakat Maghi Candat Sotong 2025,' has drawn attention from social media influencers, electronic media, and international mainstream media, highlighting its appeal.

Razali emphasized that squid jigging is a significant tourism attraction for the state, recognized and included in the VM2026 tourism calendar. More than just a recreational activity, it represents the cultural heritage of the Terengganu coastal community. The announcement was made during the launch of the 2025 Squid Jigging Season at the Marang Tourism Jetty.

The event was also attended by Kelantan Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Kamarudin Md Nor. Razali further noted that approximately 3,000 boats carrying 30,000 tourists are expected to participate in this year's squid jigging, which began in April and will continue until August.

The activity is projected to generate economic returns exceeding RM7.5 million, benefiting boat operators, hotels, homestay operators, and local traders. The programme's impact reaches fishermen, seafood traders, and craftsmen, making it a vital component of the Terengganu tourism promotion calendar and an integral part of VM2026.
