Sepang:Formula 1 is making a surprising comeback to Malaysia this weekend as the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) hosts the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2 to 4, 2026. This event marks the return of F1 to Malaysia in a unique format, as the Malaysian Grand Prix itself is not being revived.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the decision to host the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia followed an agreement in July between Formula 1, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and the governments of Malaysia and Bahrain. This move ensures the Bahrain GP remains on the 2026 F1 calendar after its earlier cancellation this season due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Sepang is known for its unpredictable races and dramatic weather, adding intrigue to this weekend's event. Since the Malaysian GP was dropped from the F1 calendar in 2017, the sport has grown significantly, thanks in part to the Netflix series 'Drive to Survive,' which has expanded F1's appeal to new audiences.
Ticket sales reflect the renewed excitement, with around 95,000 three-day passes sold as SIC aims for a 100,000 attendance. The circuit's record attendance was 126,690 spectators during the 2008 Malaysian GP. Tickets for this year's event are available only as three-day passes.
Sepang's challenging layout, featuring long straights and a fast-flowing middle section, will test cars and drivers alike, with the added variables of tyre degradation and potential tropical rain. The Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast the possibility of rain on race day, reminiscent of the 2009 Malaysian GP, which was red-flagged due to monsoon rain.
Only 10 current F1 drivers have previously raced at Sepang, giving experienced drivers like Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen potential advantages. Alonso has three victories at Sepang, while Hamilton and Verstappen have also won there in the past.
Among the new generation of drivers, Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes leads the standings and aims to perform well after a challenging Azerbaijan GP. His teammate George Russell arrives in strong form after a victory in Azerbaijan. Verstappen is also a strong contender, with Malaysian F1 icon Alex Yoong considering him a dark horse for the win.
Reigning world champion Lando Norris seeks to recover from a recent retirement in Azerbaijan, making his first competitive appearance at Sepang this weekend.
Beyond the racing, the Bahrain International Circuit's chief executive, Sheikh Salman Isa Al Khalifa, highlighted the cultural experience fans can enjoy, with Bahrain showcasing its traditions and cuisine during the event. The anticipation is high as Sepang prepares to welcome F1 back to its circuit.
