Future of Kelantan’s Traditional Arts Hinges on Youth Engagement

Kelantan:The future of Kelantan's traditional arts and culture is dependent on the next generation's ability to recognize, learn, and practice the heritage, according to Kelantan National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) director Rohaniza Abdullah.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Rohaniza emphasized the importance of efforts that not only aim to preserve these cultural elements but also provide learning opportunities for young people. She noted that sustainability in arts and culture involves continuity across generations, incorporating innovative approaches alongside traditional methods.

Speaking at the launch of the Bengkel Produk Seni Gasing Uri dan Perintis Mak Yong at the Kelantan JKKN Complex, she highlighted the 'Mak Yong' Pioneer Programme, which focuses on training children in traditional performance arts. This initiative is designed to help them understand the basics of performance, dance, acting, and speech, while also gaining valuable stage experience.

Rohaniza also discussed initiatives to introduce 'Gasing Uri', a traditional spinning top game, to the younger generation. The goal is to maintain the game's original identity while making it more accessible and appealing to today's youth.

She underscored that ongoing efforts are vital for ensuring that traditional arts continue to thrive, emphasizing that cultural heritage persists only when it is actively learned, practiced, and transmitted to future generations.
