Gaza Peace Plan: Malaysia Supports Efforts To End Killing, Destruction – PM Anwar

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that Malaysia supports the peace plan proposed by the United States, emphasizing that any effort aimed at ending the violence and destruction in Gaza is essential.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia's support is conditional, requiring the agreement to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, address unresolved issues in the West Bank, and restore the rights of Palestinians displaced from Gaza. Anwar expressed Malaysia's consistent stance with several other Muslim countries in supporting President Donald Trump's initiative. He stressed the urgency of concluding the peace effort to halt the killing of civilians and address the dire conditions in Gaza, which is facing near-starvation.

Anwar clarified Malaysia's position during the Ministers' Question Time session in the Dewan Rakyat, responding to a question from Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah regarding the government's stance on the U.S. peace plan. Anwar explained that Malaysia was not invited to the peace plan negotiations in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, due to its conditional support.

He noted that the reviewed peace plan, consisting of 20 points, does not satisfactorily address the rights of the Palestinian people or the occupation in the West Bank. Anwar mentioned receiving acknowledgment from Hamas for Malaysia's firm stance on calling for a ceasefire.

Additionally, Anwar announced plans for Malaysia to focus on rebuilding schools, hospitals, and mosques in Gaza, in collaboration with countries like Japan, China, Brazil, and South Africa. He also mentioned that Qatar and Saudi Arabia have agreed to expedite humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Anwar responded to a query from Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man on Malaysia's readiness to deploy volunteers to Gaza, stating that Malaysia is prepared to send a medical team and participate in a UN peacekeeping mission if needed. He affirmed Malaysia's commitment to participating in peacekeeping efforts to ensure lasting peace in Gaza.
