Kuala lumpur: Genting Malaysia Berhad (GENM) and its workers' union made history today with the signing of the 14th Collective Agreement (CA), which raises the minimum wage of the company's employees to RM1,800 per month, up from the statutory rate of RM1,700.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the agreement also provides a 10 per cent salary adjustment for eligible employees, with backdated payments for the period of August to October disbursed yesterday. Other provisions in the CA include revised allowances, expanded medical and outpatient benefits for employees and their immediate family members, improved reimbursement for transportation related to medical treatment, enhanced death benefits, and adjustments to annual salary increments.
Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, in his speech at the event, stated that the CA serves as an effective instrument for improving employees' wages. He praised the negotiators from both sides, noting that the negotiations were completed in just three months and that nearly 10,000 Genting workers will benefit. Sim also cautioned employers against using the RM1,700 minimum wage as the benchmark for starting salaries, emphasizing that it is meant only for basic and low-skilled jobs. He highlighted the government's salary guidelines for various skilled positions to aid in fair wage negotiations.
The CA was signed by GENM deputy president Lee Thiam Kit, with Resorts World Genting (RWG) represented by chief operating officer Aaron Chia, senior vice-president of Human Resources Tan Boo Chuan, and vice-president of Manpower and Compensation Yun Leong Yu. Representing the GENM Workers' Union were president Sikindar Ibrahim, deputy president Mohd Isa Nordin, secretary Lawrence A/L Saiman, and treasurer Tan Cheng Fei.
Lee remarked that the agreement reflects the shared commitment of management and the Workers' Union to maintain industrial harmony at GENM. He indicated that the CA symbolizes cooperation, understanding, and mutual respect between employers and employees, serving as the foundation for a stable, fair, and progressive working relationship. Lee expressed hope that this spirit of cooperation will continue to grow, enhancing productivity, innovation, and the company's competitiveness.
The CA takes effect on August 1 and remains valid until July 31, 2028, covering all legally employed GENM staff.
