Banda hilir: Global geopolitical tensions have emerged as a significant factor influencing international students' decision to pursue their studies in Malaysia, particularly at the postgraduate level. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir emphasized that Malaysia's educational quality also plays a crucial role in attracting these students.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Zambry highlighted that the current global geopolitical climate has prompted many students to consider Asia as a viable option for their education. Among Asian countries, Malaysia stands out due to its high-quality educational offerings, resulting in a yearly increase in applications from international students. This trend was discussed during the Meet and Greet with International Students in Malaysia 2025 (MAGNET 2025) Programme organized by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) in Banda Hilir.
The event saw participation from approximately 1,000 international students representing 20 Public Universities and Private Higher Education Institutions. Director-General of Higher Education Prof Datuk Dr Azlinda Azman and UTeM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Massila Kamalrudin were also in attendance.
Dr. Zambry also reassured that the increase in international student numbers will not affect the quota for local students in Malaysian universities. The ministry aims to attract about 250,000 international students by 2030, while maintaining the current educational standards and availability for local students. Presently, around 155,000 international students are studying in Malaysia across various fields.
