Kuala lumpur: Watching his three seniors win gold medals in style was just the tonic weightlifter Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin needed en route to delivering Malaysia's fourth golden glitter at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games here today. Muhammad Hafizuddin marked his Commonwealth Games debut by emerging champion in the men's 88-kilogramme (kg) category with a total lift of 345kg at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) champion in the 81kg category said the achievements of fellow lifters Mohamad Aniq Kasdan, Muhammad Aznil Bidin, and Muhammad Erry Hidayat gave him the confidence to ensure that he, too, contributed to the national contingent's success. "I am extremely happy, it's like a dream come true. When I saw my three seniors bagging gold medals, I became motivated to do the same, stand atop the podium like them, be in the forefront like them and bring glory to the country," he told Bernama after his feat.
In today's action, the 22-year-old Perlis-born Muhammad Hafizuddin lifted 162kg in the snatch and 183kg in the clean and jerk to seal victory and deliver Malaysia's fourth gold medal of the Games. His clean and jerk lift and overall total also set new Commonwealth Games records. New Zealand's Cameron David McTaggart (338kg) took silver and Scotland's Angus Doig (309kg) settled for bronze.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Hafizuddin said his ambition to become a Commonwealth Games champion grew stronger after he had to settle for silver at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, India, last year. "At the Commonwealth Championships, I won silver, but I came so close to gold. I only made mistakes in my lifts and technique. That's when I realised I could win gold at the Commonwealth Games," he said.
Weightlifting has now contributed all four of Malaysia's gold medals in Glasgow, in addition to one bronze medal won by Irene Jane Henry in the women's 48kg category. Earlier, Mohamad Aniq captured the men's 60kg title, followed by Muhamad Aznil (men's 65kg) and Muhammad Erry in the men's 79kg category, with all three also setting new Games records.
