Kuala lumpur: Malaysia's success in bagging five gold medals and one bronze in weightlifting at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games proves that local coaches are capable of producing world-class athletes when given the trust and support they deserve. The Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) described the historic achievement as not only the result of the athletes' performances, but also of the commitment, expertise, and sacrifices of the entire coaching team and officials working behind the scenes.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MWF president Datuk Ayub Rahmat expressed his belief in the capabilities of local coaches, who possess the knowledge, experience, and determination to guide national athletes to the highest level. He stated in a statement that the success is clear proof that local coaches can produce world-class athletes when they are given the opportunity, trust, and support they deserve.
Datuk Ayub highlighted that the achievement was the result of immense sacrifices made by the entire team, many of whom spent months away from their families to ensure the athletes reached peak performance. He emphasized that behind every medal won were coaches and officials who worked tirelessly to plan training programmes, manage the athletes' needs, and ensure the team's preparations ran smoothly in the quest to bring glory to the nation.
MWF also expressed its appreciation to their vice-president and team manager, Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim, for his role in coordinating the management of the national contingent throughout the Games. The federation paid tribute to the national coaching team led by Edmund Yeo Thian Chuan, together with Mohd Norshah Rizal Ruslan, for successfully translating their training programmes into outstanding performances on the Commonwealth Games stage.
The MWF extended its gratitude to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Sports Council, Olympic Council of Malaysia, National Sports Institute, sponsors, and state weightlifting associations for their continuous support in the development of the sport. According to the MWF, the success in Glasgow demonstrated that strong leadership, a sound management system, and confidence in local expertise can elevate Malaysia into one of the leading challengers on the international weightlifting stage.
