Kuala lumpur: The government has allocated RM80 million to upgrade Istana Budaya facilities, as announced by Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) secretary-general Shaharuddin Abu Sohot. This significant investment underscores the government's dedication to enhancing the institution's quality, aiming to align it with internationally acclaimed theatres.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Shaharuddin emphasized the ministry's ambition for Istana Budaya's programmes to not only adhere to international standards but also to offer substantial returns for organisers. He conveyed these remarks following the launch of the Istana Budaya 2026 programme and the handover ceremony of the MTC Pavilion sculpture 'Timber Flow: The Folded Crest' at Istana Budaya.

Meanwhile, Istana Budaya deputy director-general (Operations) Johan Cruyff @ Mohd Johari Md Nordin highlighted that the allocation encompasses upgrading works for the overstage at Panggung Sari. He expressed hope that renowned productions previously hosted at Istana Budaya, such as The Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, and Cats Musical, would return to Malaysia for large-scale performances.
