Tawau: The government has allocated RM99 million for the construction of multi-class housing units at Kabota Camp to enhance the comfort and well-being of its personnel, as announced by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He stated that the appointed contractor and the Public Works Department (JKR) have assured the completion of the project by September next year.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamed Khaled emphasized the ministry's commitment to closely monitoring the project to ensure its timely completion. He highlighted the importance of providing proper and suitable accommodation for military personnel and their families. The announcement was made during his visit to the stingless bee honey project site and the construction site for additional Armed Forces Family Housing (RKAT) units at Kabota Camp. Army chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan was also present.
Mohamed Khaled warned that contractors failing to deliver projects would face termination, referencing the recent dismissal of the Kukusan Camp housing project contractor. He acknowledged the need for extensive maintenance of existing military housing nationwide. Maintenance allocations have increased under the MADANI government, with the Malaysian Armed Forces receiving RM400 million for maintenance in 2023, a significant increase from previous years. Kabota Camp received RM1 million for housing maintenance this year, reflecting the prioritization of personnel welfare.
The Defence Minister also outlined a programme aimed at helping retiring military personnel secure quality employment. Collaborations with universities and the Department of Skills Development will offer qualifications to serving personnel. For instance, those with SPM qualifications in food services can now obtain diplomas through work experience. The government has allocated RM3 million to fund this programme, which will soon be advertised and offer 10 to 15 job categories eligible for diplomas or skills certificates.
Mohamed Khaled stressed that personnel retiring at 41 or 42 years cannot rely solely on pensions, and the government is committed to ensuring they secure well-paying jobs to support their families. He concluded by expressing gratitude for the service and sacrifices of military personnel, emphasizing the government's dedication to their welfare and well-being.
