Kuala lumpur: The government will assist in streamlining and elevating pondok institutions, focusing on improvements in physical facilities and academic disciplines, announced Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister emphasized the introduction of new fields of study to align with current needs as a key initiative.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted that several pondok institutions will be selected to pioneer new learning traditions based on their areas of specialisation and tarbiah or disciplines. He noted that this marks the first concerted effort since independence in 1957 to truly aid these institutions. Anwar clarified that while he would not dictate the pondok curriculum, he aims to enhance their dignity and position through the inclusion of new knowledge areas.

In his address at the National Turath Scholars' Consultation during the Malaysia Islamic Turath Festival 2026, Anwar underscored the need for pondok institutions to integrate new disciplines, including artificial intelligence (AI). He described AI as a significant tool for Islamic outreach and the development of the Muslim community, while cautioning about potential ethical and moral challenges.

Efforts to fortify pondok institutions should also consider the diverse educational pathways available to students, Anwar stated. He acknowledged that not all institutions need to produce religious scholars exclusively, recognizing the aspirations of students to pursue various fields such as engineering, piloting, and TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training).

Additionally, Anwar suggested that some pondok institutions should establish pathways to universities, enabling graduates to contribute to the broader public education system. He acknowledged the importance of such pathways for influencing public education and the potential for graduates to not necessarily pursue further university education if they choose otherwise.
