Ipoh: The government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing educational opportunities and prioritizing the needs of the people, including exceptional students, to continue their studies at higher education institutions in the country, as stated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the government's efforts to expand study opportunities both domestically and internationally. He highlighted the challenges faced when the University Central Unit (UPU) opened, noting issues of inadequate places and racial tensions. Anwar assured that these concerns are being addressed through negotiation and promised 1,500 places for outstanding Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and matriculation students in the upcoming Budget 2026.
Anwar made these remarks while addressing 1,500 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates at the MADANI Excellent SPM Programme held at Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Yuk Choy. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh was also in attendance. During the presentation of the 2026 Budget, Anwar, who also serves as the Minister of Finance, revealed plans to add 1,500 new places for Bachelor's Degree studies in ten key fields at the country's five research universities, focusing on disciplines like law, accounting, and artificial intelligence.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of international students in positioning Malaysia as an international education hub. He clarified that their presence does not threaten local educational opportunities, as international students are required to pay in full for their education.
Anwar further reiterated the government's prioritization of education in its budget allocations, pointing out that education receives the highest funding to enhance the quality of national education, in contrast to other countries that allocate more funds to defense.
