Cyberjaya: The MADANI Government is prepared to consider cutting Cabinet ministers' salaries if the national economy deteriorates further amid the global energy crisis, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He mentioned that while the current ministerial pay is relatively low given the scale of responsibilities, it remains justified as long as ministers perform well.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Prime Minister emphasized that the focus should be on ensuring effective governance rather than concentrating on salary reductions at the moment. He stated, "Our salaries are relatively low, but what matters is that ministers carry out their duties well. As for me, I have no issue with not taking a salary, but it is their right as long as they perform."
He added that if the economic situation worsens, the government might need to consider reviewing or reducing ministers' pay. His comments came in response to a question on whether the government would look into proposals to cut ministers' salaries, akin to measures taken in Indonesia. The remarks were made while speaking to reporters after Friday prayers at Surau Bomba Cyberjaya.
