Govt Prohibits Alcohol-Related Events in Schools, Asserts PM Anwar

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the government's unwavering stance against any events involving alcohol consumption or activities that contradict the core educational values within school premises, even beyond regular school hours.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted that the use of school facilities, such as halls, should not be permitted for events that breach the educational principles and regulations of the nation, even if rented by external entities like alumni associations. He reiterated that safeguarding the school environment is paramount, ensuring it remains a place of learning and value cultivation.

In response to a supplementary question from Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar addressed allegations regarding the serving of alcohol during an alumni event at a secondary school in Ipoh on September 27. He noted that the Education Minister had briefed him on the incident and that the government is contemplating stricter guidelines to avert such occurrences in the future.

Anwar clarified that the prohibition is not an infringement on the rights of non-Muslims but rather an effort to uphold shared universal values among all Malaysians. He appealed to non-Muslim citizens to understand this perspective, emphasizing the importance of maintaining schools as venues dedicated to education and value-building.

The Prime Minister also mentioned that while evaluating the extent of authority over private schools is necessary, the principle of banning activities involving alcohol or gambling at government schools remains non-negotiable. He expressed his inclination to disallow such gatherings, regardless of their previous occurrences, either organized by government bodies or other entities.
