Kuala lumpur: The use of beacons and sirens by government vehicles must be conducted with a focus on the safety of other road users. Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Director Datuk Seri Mohammed Hasbullah Ali emphasized the importance of this safety measure, urging road users to be vigilant and provide the right-of-way to enforcement vehicles or those on emergency duties.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohammed Hasbullah highlighted that drivers of government vehicles equipped with beacons and sirens should ensure the safety of other road users at traffic lights before continuing their journey. He specified that only vehicles from ministries or agencies with investigative and enforcement roles are permitted to use these devices, as outlined in the Sixth Schedule (Rule 24B) of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Rules 1959.
He further noted that obstructing or tailgating an enforcement vehicle operating in emergency mode is an offence under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which deals with obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duties. His remarks came after inspecting a fatal accident site involving a Black Maria lorry from the Malaysian Immigration Department, which resulted in the deaths of a family of three at the Maju Junction traffic light intersection on Jalan Sultan Ismail.
The driver of the Black Maria lorry was brought before the Magistrates' Court and pleaded not guilty to five charges, including dangerous driving that caused the fatalities of the three family members.
