Helical Fusion and Hazama Ando Collaborate on Fusion Pilot Plant Construction

Tokyo: Helical Fusion Co Ltd and Hazama Ando Corporation have formalized a collaborative agreement to construct Helix KANATA, a fusion pilot plant projected to be operational in the 2030s. This partnership, cemented through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), positions Hazama Ando as an official partner in the Helix Program, thereby enhancing the industrial and construction support required for Helical Fusion's commercial fusion energy project.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Helix Program, initiated in April 2026 by Helical Fusion, aims to expedite the development of commercially viable fusion power plants. The program seeks to leverage industrial and engineering expertise to realize its goals. Helical Fusion's Co-founder and CEO, Takaya Taguchi, highlighted the intention of the program to not only achieve commercial fusion power but also provide a sustainable energy source for future generations.

Kazuhiko Kuniya, Representative Director and President of Hazama Ando, expressed commitment to leveraging the company's experience in power and energy infrastructure projects to facilitate the development of fusion energy facilities. As part of the MoU, both companies will explore construction requirements and project execution strategies for future fusion energy projects, including the Helix KANATA and Helix HARUKA, an integrated demonstration device.

Helical Fusion, based in Japan, is pioneering the development of fusion power plants utilizing the Helical Stellarator approach. This magnetic-confinement fusion concept is supported by extensive research conducted at Japanese universities and public research institutions.
