High-Speed Chase in Johor Leads to Arrest and Drug Seizure

JOHOR BAHRU: Police arrested two individuals and confiscated illegal drugs following a high-speed car chase that spanned from Jalan Tampoi in Taman Seri Bahagia to Simpang Renggam in Kluang. The pursuit, which occurred yesterday, resulted in injuries to two police officers.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar reported that the suspects, a 49-year-old local man and a 38-year-old Singaporean woman, were apprehended at around 1:30 a.m. The incident began when officers from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of the Johor Bahru Selatan district police headquarters noticed a vehicle driving suspiciously during an Ops Tapis operation on Jalan Tampoi.

The officers attempted to stop the vehicle for inspection near Persiaran Alif Harmoni. However, the driver accelerated abruptly, injuring two policemen in the process. Despite instructions to halt, the suspects continued their flight along the Pasir Gudang Highway and several other major roads, including the Iskandar Coastal Highway and the Second Link Highway. They breached a toll gate at the Senai Utara Toll Plaza before entering the northbound North-South Expressway.

With assistance from patrol cars from IPD Kulai and Kluang, police successfully intercepted the suspects' vehicle in Simpang Renggam. A subsequent search of the car revealed multiple packages suspected to contain illegal drugs.

Acting on information gleaned from the arrests, police conducted further raids in Johor Bahru, seizing a variety of drugs, including cannabis, syabu, ecstasy powder, heroin, and nitrazepam pills. The estimated value of the confiscated drugs is RM54,831.

Initial tests indicated both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine use. Background checks showed the male suspect had a history of drug-related and other criminal offenses, and he was wanted for an additional case. Both suspects are being held in remand from December 31, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

The case is being investigated under multiple sections of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Penal Code, including charges of attempted murder, mischief, and obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their duties.
