Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur – The Doppler Radar Station in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, has been declared structurally unsafe following damages sustained from the magnitude 7.4 earthquake on December 2. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) made this assessment after the quake and subsequent aftershocks.
According to Philippines News Agency, The local government unit (LGU) of Hinatuan stated on Wednesday that the Doppler Radar Station has long been a significant landmark and a key reference point for weather disturbances in the Philippines. Despite the facility still being operational, the DPWH has restricted access to visitors due to safety concerns. “Visible cracks in the tower indicate severe damage, posing a risk to public safety and nearby structures,” the LGU’s statement noted.
The Hinatuan Engineering Office is actively monitoring the area around the weather station, implementing measures to prevent public access amid ongoing aftershocks in the town, prioritizing safety and caution.
