Hong kong: The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is reinforcing Hong Kong's reputation as the 'Events Capital of Asia' by utilizing the 50th anniversary of the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens as a platform under its 'Hong Kong Mega 8' campaign.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, HKTB emphasized the significance of the internationally acclaimed rugby tournament in attracting global visitors, underscoring Hong Kong's capabilities in hosting world-class events that integrate sports, culture, and innovation.
The celebration incorporated a technological aspect with China-made robots, previously showcased on CCTV's Spring Festival Gala, performing at the opening ceremony. This performance was complemented by traditional elements such as a dragon dance and cheerleading routines.
HKTB Chairman, Dr. Peter Lam, noted that over the past fifty years, the Hong Kong Sevens has grown into a prominent international sporting event, capturing global attention and affirming the city's allure as a prime venue for large-scale events.
The opening performance of the 50th edition combined tradition with innovation. The event commenced with a dragon dance, followed by 10 robots and a cheerleading squad executing dynamic choreography with precise coordination.
Post the cheerleading act, lasers illuminated the Main Stadium pitch, showcasing participating nations from past tournaments, legendary Sevens players, and an effect featuring twin dragons soaring over Hong Kong, commemorating the 50-year journey of the Hong Kong Sevens.
The closing ceremony concluded with an impressive pyrotechnic display from the stadium roof, providing a stunning finale to the three-day tournament.
Outside the stadium, HKTB's promotional efforts included exhibiting the robots at iconic locations such as the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui and the East Coast Boardwalk in North Point, creating content aimed at enhancing Hong Kong's global presence.
To amplify outreach, HKTB partnered with Hong Kong China Rugby to host international key opinion leaders (KOLs) and representatives from the travel trade, MICE, and cruise sectors, offering them a firsthand experience of the event and the city's tourism offerings.
