HLEP Project Strengthens Perak’s Position As Driver Of Green Economy

Bandariang: The implementation of the RM5.8 billion Hydro Life Extension Programme (HLEP), supported by the development of a Centralised Placement Facility as a strategic component in the Sungai Perak hydroelectric corridor, continues to strengthen Perak's position as a driver of the country's future green economy. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad noted that the project, with a capacity to generate over 650.75 megawatts, not only enhances the operational efficiency of hydroelectric power stations but is also capable of attracting high-value investments, including in the green technology and data centre sectors.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) investment in the HLEP project is set to be the main catalyst for economic growth in Hulu Perak, with the development impact expected to boost nearby areas, such as Gerik and the Hulu Perak district. The state government is committed to ensuring every phase of this project provides benefits to the people, focusing on empowering local contractors and developing vendors to sustainably strengthen the industry's ecosystem, as stated by the Menteri Besar. His speech, read by Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, was delivered at the groundbreaking ceremony for the workers' quarters in Bandariang, Gerik.

Mohammad Nizar, who officiated the ceremony, was joined by Datuk Salbiah Mohamed and Datuk Redza Rafiq Abdul Razak. Saarani emphasized that the HLEP project indirectly creates opportunities for locals to be involved in technical work and operational support. Cooperation between industry players and training institutes is crucial to ensuring the local workforce meets the required skill demands.

Redza Rafiq remarked that HLEP is not merely an energy infrastructure project but a strategic instrument shaping a new economic landscape for the state. It integrates clean energy development, empowers human capital development, and strengthens the industrial ecosystem within a holistic framework. Strengthening the Temengor-Bersia-Kenering hydroelectric corridor will boost investors' confidence, pave the way for new industrial growth, and place Perak at the forefront of the country's Renewable Energy transition agenda.

On the development of the centralised placement facility, it is noted that it can house 200 workers and is critical for ensuring operational efficiency in large-scale projects like HLEP. The facility provides a conducive, safe, and organized environment, ensuring the workforce can operate optimally.
