IINTAS IIUM A Strategic Step In Navigating ASEAN’s Regional Challenges – PM Anwar

Kuala lumpur: The establishment of the Institute of International and ASEAN Studies (IINTAS) under the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) marked a significant step in strengthening Malaysia's leadership within ASEAN, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister stated that IINTAS would enhance Malaysia's regional role by providing credible research, policy ideas, and strategic insights to support ASEAN's cohesion and global positioning.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of IINTAS during a keynote address at its launch at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC) IIUM. He highlighted the challenges faced by ASEAN, including recent tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, which have led to the displacement of over 300,000 people. Despite a ceasefire agreement, the region must remain vigilant, and Malaysia has taken proactive steps by hosting Thai and Cambodian leaderships in Kuala Lumpur.

The Prime Minister's speech, delivered by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, underscored Malaysia's commitment to dialogue and peace within ASEAN. Anwar suggested that IINTAS could collaborate with other research centers and partners to promote research, dialogue, and policy development. He also emphasized strengthening engagement with ASEAN's Strategic Dialogue Partners, including the United States, China, India, and other global powers, to address regional and global challenges effectively.

The institute's launch was accompanied by a seminar titled 'ASEAN Futures: Navigating Regionalism, Reconciliation, and Rapprochement,' aimed at fostering critical reflection on ASEAN's direction amid changing geopolitical dynamics. Anwar noted that the seminar provided an opportunity for serious reflection on how ASEAN can respond to instability, rebuild regional trust, and chart a path forward.

In his address, Anwar expressed hope that the discussions would reinforce ASEAN's role as a community anchored in shared values and cooperation. He concluded by stating that the day's milestones would contribute to a deeper purpose, combining knowledge, responsibility, and vision to shape minds, guide policy, and support peace in the region.
