Indian National Sentenced to 35 Years and 12 Whipping for Girlfriend’s Murder

Kuala lumpur: An Indian national, Palwinder Singh, was sentenced to 35 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane by the High Court today after being found guilty of murdering his girlfriend by strangling her following a sexual encounter three years ago. The verdict was delivered by Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid, who concluded that the defense had failed to introduce any reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Judge Azhar Abdul Hamid declared Palwinder Singh, 28, guilty under Section 302 of the Penal Code. The judge emphasized that the prosecution's evidence was strong and convincing, leading to the guilty verdict. Consequently, the court sentenced Singh to 35 years of imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane.

The judge ordered that Palwinder Singh, a former technician, begin serving his prison sentence from the date of his arrest on October 6, 2022. Singh was charged with murdering his 36-year-old girlfriend in a hotel room on Jalan Alor, Bukit Bintang, between 8:30 pm and 9:20 pm on the day of the crime.

During the mitigation process, Singh's lawyer, K. Viknesvaran, pleaded for leniency, highlighting that this was Singh's first offense and that he expressed remorse for his actions. Despite these pleas, the court maintained its decision based on the severity of the crime.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Syajaratudur Abd Rahman represented the prosecution, presenting a case that ultimately led to the conviction and sentencing of Singh.
