Influenza Cases In Penang Under Control, No Significant Increase Says Exco

Penang: Influenza infections in Penang remain under control with no significant increase in cases, as confirmed by State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen. The latest data from the clinical-based Influenza-like Illness (ILI) surveillance for Epidemiological Weeks 32 to 37 this year indicates a rate of between 9.5 and 10.5 percent.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the laboratory-based ILI surveillance revealed a slight increase in positive rates, ranging from 26.7 to 28.9 percent, with Influenza A being the most common strain. Despite this rise, the current positive rate is still lower than the same period in 2024, which recorded rates between 35.6 and 51.1 percent.

Gooi also noted a significant decrease in reported respiratory infection clusters this year, showing a decline of 52.4 percent compared to last year. However, he advised the public to remain vigilant, especially towards the end of the year when cases historically tend to rise. Preventive measures are recommended, particularly in enclosed and crowded areas.

He further recommended that senior citizens aged 60 and above, especially those with at least one comorbid condition, receive the influenza vaccine free of charge at government health facilities. The state government, in collaboration with the Penang State Health Department (JKN), is committed to ongoing surveillance and monitoring of influenza trends both locally and internationally to enhance preparedness.

The state government, through JKN, will continue to monitor respiratory infection developments and adjust preparedness strategies as needed.
