LYON (France), Investing in skills is crucial as it provides an effective means to create jobs and build sustainable economies, said WorldSkills International (WSI) president Chris Humphries.

He emphasised that skills were the key to empowering young people, reducing inequality, boosting industry competitiveness, and ensuring sustainability.

Humphries added that WSI organised the WorldSkills competition (WSC) with the aim of making the world a better place through skill development.

‘We are a global movement working every day to improve skill development around the world.

‘Today, we have competitions at local, regional, national, and international levels, all aimed at making essential careers more visible, accessible, and valued,’ he said at a press conference today.

The WSC was established to create opportunities, with the first event held in Spain in 1950.

The city of Lyon is filled with young global talent as it hosts the 47th WSC at Euroexpo from today until Sept 15.

Returning to Lyon nearly 30 ye
ars after the first event in 1995, WSC 2024 will feature 1,400 participants from over 70 countries and regions, competing in 62 categories.

The opening ceremony is set for today at Lyon’s largest venue, the LDLC Arena

Malaysia is competing in 14 categories, including Robot System Integration, IT Software Solutions for Business, Heavy Vehicle Technology, and Digital Construction.
