IOI Properties and Marriott Launch Tree Planting Initiative in Selangor

Puchong south: In conjunction with World Environment Day, IOI Properties Group Berhad (IOIPG) has partnered with Marriott International and the Marriott Worldwide Business Council in Malaysia to organize a community tree planting event at 16 Sierra, Puchong South, Selangor.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, over 100 participants, including IOIPG employees, residents of 16 Sierra, and staff from Le M©ridien Petaling Jaya and 24 Marriott International hotels, took part in the event last Saturday. Trees were planted at eight locations across the 535-acre township.

IOIPG highlighted that the planted trees will, once matured, help the community by reducing air pollution, contributing to carbon sequestration, and providing shade for walkways to mitigate urban heat effects.

Calvin Sew, the general manager of 16 Sierra, stated that the initiative aligns with the IOI Sustain Roadmap 2030, targeting enhancements in the township's environmental ecosystem and community well-being. It signifies the long-term commitment of both IOI Properties and Marriott International to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

In its sustainability efforts, IOIPG has implemented eco-friendly features in 16 Sierra, including a firefly habitat at The Tribe Glamping and a dry creek system at Central Park to support the natural ecosystem.

Sew also mentioned plans to create an eco-corridor to connect green spaces throughout the township, alongside a 60.5-acre certified green district focusing on renewable energy, water management, environmental planning, green buildings, and sustainable transport.

To promote biodiversity, rare and threatened tree species listed under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, such as Aquilaria malaccensis (Gaharu) and Mangifera caesia (Binjai), were planted during the event.

The initiative supports various United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Christopher Moore, Sustainability Chair of the Marriott Worldwide Business Councils Malaysia and General Manager of Le M©ridien Petaling Jaya, expressed pride in collaborating with IOIPG on this initiative. He emphasized that the partnership aligns with Marriott International's sustainability goals and efforts to reduce global carbon emissions.

Located near the 16 Sierra MRT station, the township also features COVO, IOIPG's first GreenRE-certified, transit-oriented development, offering 601 serviced apartment units. Priced from RM584,000, units range from 550 to 1,130 square feet, targeting young families, professionals, and home upgraders.
