Iran Withdraws from 2026 Track Cycling World Cup Due to West Asia Conflict

Nilai: Iran will not compete in the final round of the 2026 Track Cycling World Cup, scheduled to be held at the National Velodrome in Nilai from April 24 to 26, due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysian National Cycling Federation (PKBM) president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill mentioned that the tense situation in Iran has made it challenging for athletes and team officials to travel. Communication with Iran has been disrupted, adding another layer of difficulty.

Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill shared that despite the current constraints, Iranian athletes and officials are safe, and efforts to maintain communication are ongoing. He expressed willingness to assist in rebuilding Iran's cycling programs and activities once the conflict concludes. The Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC), under his leadership, plans to support the Iran Cycling Federation in their recovery efforts. Furthermore, discussions are underway to seek additional support from the International Cycling Union (UCI).

Amarjit also announced that 46 countries, comprising 370 riders and 160 officials, have confirmed participation in the event. Notable riders such as five-time Olympic champion Harrie Lavreysen from the Netherlands, Nicholas Paul, S©bastien Vigier, Luca Spiegel, and Danial Staniszewski will be competing. Malaysia's own national stars, Datuk Azizulhasni Awang and Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, are also set to participate, drawing significant attention to their performances.
