Tokyo: The Japanese government and industries' support is critical to helping Malaysia build its capabilities in advanced technologies, particularly semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and advanced packaging, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized that Malaysia is positioning itself to move beyond traditional growth sectors by embracing digitalisation, AI, and other emerging technologies, while strengthening its role as a regional semiconductor hub. He noted that Malaysia has become a semiconductor hub in the region, producing not only low-end but also more high-end products. Collaboration with Japanese industries and support from the Japanese government are seen as crucial in this area.
Anwar highlighted Malaysia's focus on developing capabilities in quantum technologies by learning from international partners that are more advanced in the field. He also identified energy transition as a key driver of Malaysia's next phase of growth, supported by the country's existing strengths in the energy sector. Anwar mentioned the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, which is backed by several governments including Vietnam, Laos, and Singapore, as well as collaboration with Sarawak.
While exploring new areas, Anwar emphasized the importance of maintaining Malaysia's traditional growth engines alongside pursuing new disciplines to accelerate economic transformation and achieve high-income nation status. He also underscored the significance of political stability, strong institutions, and clear policy direction in supporting Malaysia's long-term development agenda.
