Johor Bahru:The Johor Bahru Court Complex in Kota Iskandar is scheduled to commence operations on January 1, 2027, as announced by Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Law and Institutional Reform.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the new complex, spanning 6.88 hectares, is designed to provide modern infrastructure to facilitate judicial processes and improve the experience for court users. This development represents a significant government investment aimed at strengthening the judicial institution and enhancing access to justice with efficiency, equity, and integrity.
During the project handover ceremony, Azalina emphasized the importance of the complex in upholding the law and ensuring justice. The event was also attended by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. She highlighted that the design of the complex was inspired by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, incorporating traditional Malay and vernacular architectural styles. Plans are underway for His Majesty to officially open the complex later this year.
The complex will feature two blocks housing 24 courtrooms, including one Special Court, seven High Courts, eight Sessions Courts, and eight Magistrates' Courts. Additional facilities include judges' chambers, administrative offices, a library, a temporary detention area, and a multipurpose hall. The complex is equipped with voice-to-text technology integrated into its case management system and offers ample parking, with spaces designated for persons with disabilities and electric vehicles.
Construction began on February 8, 2023, led by Cahaya Jauhar Sdn Bhd using the Industrialised Building System (IBS), and was completed within the contractual timeframe. The existing Johor Bahru Court building will be returned to the state government.
Nanta noted that the RM194.5 million project was completed on schedule and is part of 11 court construction projects nationwide with a total value of RM736 million. The project recorded over two million working hours without any lost-time incidents. Management of the complex will now be handled by the Legal Affairs Division, with Cahaya Jauhar Sdn Bhd responsible for addressing any defects during the two-year liability period under the supervision of JKR.
