Johor Bahru: The Johor branch of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) successfully thwarted a drug smuggling attempt by a syndicate using a courier service. The operation led to the confiscation of drugs weighing 10.194 kilogrammes, valued at RM955,687, in April.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the JKDM director, Aminul Izmeer Mohd Sohaimi, stated that the enforcement team conducted their operation at 3:35 pm on April 23. They inspected two suspicious parcels originating from Hong Kong at a mail and courier centre in Johor Bahru.

Aminul revealed that inside each parcel, the team discovered two packets of candy placed atop a white bottle containing a black liquid. Initial tests identified the black liquid as a type of morphine. The parcels were addressed to an individual residing in a double-storey terrace house in Pulai, Johor, and were misleadingly declared as food items.

The ownership of the house remains under investigation, with authorities actively working to identify and apprehend the syndicate and the intended recipient of the parcels. Aminul noted that this incident marks the fifth case of drug trafficking via courier services recorded in the state this year. These cases have involved various drugs, including marijuana.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
