Port klang: For many Malaysians, the declaration of independence at Stadium Merdeka on Aug 31, 1957, is a moment learned through history books, old radio clips, black-and-white documentaries, or family stories passed down over generations. But for Mary Josephine Amalanathan, now 89, that bright Saturday morning lives vividly in her memory, a day she will always cherish.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Josephine recalls being present at Merdeka Stadium on that historic day to witness the Union Jack being lowered and Tunku Abdul Rahman raising the Jalur Gemilang and declaring Malaysia's independence. The grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of one stood among thousands of hopeful and proud Malaysians, watching the birth of a new nation. She vividly remembers seeing the founding fathers, including Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Tan Cheng Lock, and Tun V.T. Sambanthan, along with the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Josephine Amalanathan's journey in education began in 1955 as a trainee teacher at the Convent School in Kajang, Selangor. Without formal teachers' training institutes, she attended a training course at Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur every Saturday. She later taught at Marian Convent in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, and the Convent School in Klang, Selangor. In 1961, at just 25, she became the first headmistress of SK St Anne's Convent in Port Klang, building the school from 60 pupils to over 600 by the time she left in 1987.
Mrs. Nathan, as she was fondly called, was known for her discipline and compassion. Her strict yet caring approach was respected by both students and teachers. Josephine emphasized the importance of handwriting and instilled precision and pride in her students. Her commitment extended to teachers, as she meticulously reviewed their work, ensuring high standards.
Josephine's legacy is one of respect and excellence. Kamaleswary Sandragesu, who succeeded her as headmistress, described her as hardworking and fair. Retired teacher Quake Geok Lee recalled the discipline instilled by Mrs. Nathan that earned the school recognition. Josephine's pride was evident when MGS Klang won the 'Best Decorated and Cleanest School' competition in 1990.
After retiring in 1991, Josephine continued to educate by offering free tuition to underprivileged children through Educare. She co-founded the St Anne's Convent Alumni Association in 2015, uniting former students and serving as its first patron. Josephine was awarded the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian by the Sultan of Selangor in 1989 for her dedicated service. Her influence remains through her belief that every child can shine, a testament to her lifelong commitment to education and community.
