Segamat: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) have been instructed to promptly conduct an audit and investigation into the trailer company implicated in a recent crash in Segamat that resulted in three fatalities.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Transport Minister Anthony Loke stressed the necessity for decisive action, including holding the company accountable for not supervising its driver, who was found to be under the influence of methamphetamine. Loke expressed hope that the police would swiftly conclude their investigation and bring charges against the driver. He also voiced confidence that the Attorney General would pursue a prosecution that reflects the severity of the offence.
Loke further reported that two victims of the crash remain hospitalized, with one in critical condition in the intensive care unit. He characterized the incident as another unfortunate accident stemming from a lorry driver's drug misuse, while acknowledging that most lorry drivers conduct their work professionally. He urged all drivers to prioritize safety and avoid actions that could endanger lives.
During a visit to Hospital Segamat, Loke met with the victims' families and offered financial assistance to help with medical expenses. The accident occurred at 3:45 pm on April 2 at the Taman Golden Hill junction in Gemas Baharu, where the trailer driver allegedly collided with the back of a van carrying a family of five. The collision caused the van to skid into the opposite lane, where it was struck by a 10-tonne lorry, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including a married couple.
The 28-year-old driver has been remanded for four days by the Segamat Magistrate's Court.
